So in my wrap-up I said I wanted to take March reading a bit slower… and then Netgalley approved me for 10 books! Oops. Well, at least we are still in lockdown for a while it seems so I got plenty of reading time right? Well actually, I got a new job! Next week I will be starting at the vaccination centers as an allround employee. So that is a Huge relief, but also means I should spend this weekend wisely.
Thankfully six of the ten books I got were comics/graphic novels… and I am really excited for all of them. So here are my reviews for the first two:
In the Night Realm, shifters, vampires, weirns, and other night things passing for human may prowl the streets, but school is still in session—and you still have to do your homework!
The Weirn Books by Svetlana Chmakova is a book I requested a long time ago, but only got approved to now. And I am very happy I got it because I Loved it. The writing style is great and the humour and sarcasm are On Point! It works really well together with the format and plays around with the fond to make it a truly dynamic reading experience. The art style was maybe a bit too simple for my liking, but I got used to very quickly. My only minor issue is that it could have been a bit darker… When the scary shit goes down everything is just a bit too pretty, pink and purple.
I loved the story and the idea of the world. The book is set in world where all the paranormal kids come out at night to go to school. And of course there is a scary mansion in the middle of the dark woods, where kids have gone missing. Not anything original, but perfectly executed.
Overall this was a Really fun read that I just absolutely adored! I believe the author already has some books set in the same universe, for an older audience, so I will check those out for sure.
Save the day, destroy the world…
Torn from the past and bonded with a living alien armor, will X-O Manowar become the hero the world needs now? As a futuristic force arises to destroy the planet, only this ancient warrior king has the courage to stand against impossible odds!
This is a comic I buddy-read with The Husband. He got excited by the Manowar part, I know the author from a very beloved Spider-Woman series… so we were both very excited. And rightfully so. I did go into this pretty blind, but we do start with a short introduction to the character… and as long as you just keep ‘Super Hero’ in mind, you are good to go. There is one reference to a past event (which I guess is when he lost his hand), and everything else is explained within the story. And the story itself was good as well. It slowed down a bit too much for me in the middle, but apart from that I thought it was great. The writing is as good as I hoped it would be, and the banter between Aric and his suit made us giggle several times.
I liked the art-style. When it comes to the action-scenes I have seen better, but otherwise I thought it was good. Aric was a great character. He has a very strong personality, which is great to see in a super-hero comic. I am a bit annoyed with the cliffhanger at the end of the book (I do like my full volumes to wrap-up at least a bit), but it does make me want to pick up the second book for sure… whenever that comes out.
So far, so good… Let’s see if I will be just as positive about the comics I’ll be reading tomorrow.

I thought Manowar sounded familiar so I looked it up and sure enough, it was one of Valiant’s comics from back in the 90’s. I only remember it because both Valiant comics and Image comics were small publishers trying to prove that non-DC/Marvel comics could succeed in the business.

Thanks! Ill be doing everything apart from vaccinating… so host, admin, stock take, catering, etc. I’m very excited, but also very nervous. I am Terrible with needles. I always pass out. So this might go horribly, or it might help me more than just financially.
And did they? At least Dave knew of them (not sure if he read any of them).
